Tips for Healing and Soothing No-see-um Bites

Something bit you and you didn’t know. It’s hours later and suddenly you are SO aware. Blame the no-see-ums. They can bite you without you knowing because they are barely even visible. It can take hours to days for the human body to react to the “poison-like” substance from the bite. The welts that form from these reactions are incredibly itchy and can easily develop into infected lesions. The welts and itching last for days to weeks and you find yourself just wishing and waiting for the itching to stop and the red bumps to go away. While your body will heal itself in time, sometimes with the assistance of antibiotics and/or antihistamines, what can you do to ease the discomfort of the incessant itching?

How to Fight the Bite

Many people aren’t expecting a no-see-um bite because they are often unaware of their existence and can’t see them to know they’re there. Often when bites are discovered, it is hours to days after having been bitten. People will wake up scratching and are soon alarmed at what they see in the mirror. The large red welts can easily put someone into an itchy panic, but never fear, there are many common household items that have anti-itch properties.

Some home remedies to help ease the itch of no-see-um bites are:

  • the application of underarm deodorant to the bite
  • wiping the bite with rubbing alcohol
  • applying toothpaste to the affected area
  • mixing baking soda with water to make a paste and rubbing it onto the bite

Ice or very cold water are immediate and safe ways to sooth the skin. The worst thing someone can for no-see-um bites is not resist the urge to scratch. By scratching the bites, the itch will worsen and the blisters caused by the bites will most likely open. These lesion can get infected quickly and potentially lead to doctor visits or the need for other forms of medical assistance.
